Is Catnip Safe for kittens?

Catnip is a plant known scientifically as Nepeta cataria that is a member of the mint family. It’s important to note that catnip is perfectly safe and harmless to kittens. However, kittens don’t necessarily experience the same effects of catnip as adult felines. While you could offer catnip to a kitten, it won’t necessarily elicit the same reaction, if any. According to PetPlace, small kittens don’t usually respond to catnip and may even go out of their way to ignore it. Whether or not your kitten develops an interest in catnip typically won’t show until about three to six months of age, says PetMD. So while it isn’t harmful to expose young kittens to catnip, you’re better off waiting to introduce them to it when they are a bit older so they can fully enjoy the experience.

What is Catnip and what is it made up of?

It is a plant of the mint family, with downy leaves, purple-spotted white flowers, and a pungent smell which attracts cats. The plant produces this chemical nepetalactone in microscopic bulbs that coat its leaves, stems, and seed pods. When these fragile bulbs rupture, they release the nepetalactone into the air.

How does catnip calm kittens?

The most intense catnip experience starts with the nose one whiff of the stuff and your kitten promptly goes crazy. Researchers suspect that catnip targets feline 'happy' receptors in the brain. When eaten, however, catnips tend to have the opportunity effect and your kitten mellows out. Catnip can help kitten relax and engage in play both of which can help reduce stress. You can get catnip in its dry form for sprinkling on scratching pads or your kitten's bed.

How much Catnip can a kitten take?

For very young kitties, start smaller with a teaspoon or less of dried catnip, or just a small toy rubbed in catnip, and be sure your little feline is at least over 3 months old. Note that some kitties need to be a bit older to be affected by the nip.
