The types of coffee beans and it's brewing has a huge impact on your cup.
There are primarily four types of coffee beans:
Arabica (Coffea arabica)
this is the most commonly produced coffee bean which most of us are familiar with. It accounts for over 60% of the world's coffee production.
Arabica has worn the crown for more than a century now.
Arabica trees are generally easy to care for because of their small stature which makes harvesting simpler. Arabica is the delicate of all four. It has to be grown with a great care as it is influenced easily by it's surrounding and prone to diseases.
Arabica beans have tones of sugar, fruit and berries which makes it sweeter and softer. the high acidity and the amount of sugar not only plays a major role in flavor but also it's aroma and consistency of coffee.
To get the best out of arabica beans it has to be served hot and even brewed with drip-coffee technique. Arabica beans loses it's flavor when mixed with milk or cream.
Robusta (Coffea robusta)
It's attributes are also similar to what the name suggests- robust!!
It contains twice as much caffeine as arabica beans.
Robusta beans are easier to grow as they are not dominated by the environment and are not prone to any diseases. They produce fruits earlier, have a higher yield and are cheaper to produce.
Robusta has a stronger and harsher taste, with a grain-like overtone and peanutty aftertaste. They are considered inferior to arabica beans. However, the good quality is appreciated in instant coffee, espresso and ground coffee mixtures because of it's good crema.
This is a perfect coffee for cream and sugar lovers. The good quality of robusta beans does not lose it's flavor when milk or sugar is added.
Liberica (Coffea liberica)
Liberica coffee was first discovered in Liberica which gives it ti's name. It's the third popular type of coffee accounting for 2% of the world's coffee production. It plays an important role in the history of coffee. It produces the biggest beans. the trees are also the largest and the beans are said to be yellow-ish color.
The flavor profile is unique. It is generally described as smoky, floral with hints of dark chocolate and ripe berry.it is desired for its smooth aftertaste and persistent taste of rich dark chocolate.
Excelsa (Coffea excelsa or Coffea liberica var. dewevrei)
Excelsa has a low yield and beans are “teardrop” shaped. It accounts for only about 1% of the world’s coffee production. Precisely because of this, excelsa is considered to be the real gem for coffee lovers. In spite of high caffeine content, it’s aroma is tender, slightly sweet and very fruity.
Due to high caffeine it is strong and full bodied therefore it is used as coffee blend fro a heavy bodied coffee.
Its taste is mysterious, dark, fruity and tarty which lures coffee fans to experience it’s variety.
